Safeguard your Medical Identity

Treat your health insurance card like your credit card. Medical identity theft is a fast-growing crime, and difficult to rectify. Medical identify theft occurs when someone steals your insurance card number to obtain prescriptions, medical services or medical supplies.

How does this harm you? These services appear on your medical record as it you received them, and other medical professionals may provide unnecessary or potentially life threatening treatment for diseases that you do not have - based on the information in your medical record. This information may be difficult to have removed from your medical record.

Don't give out your insurance or Medicare card number over the phone, or to a business or provider unless you can ensure they are legitimate. Don't loan your card to anyone.
