How to Write a Learning Objective

Objectives are learner‐centered, observable, measurable actions that contain the three elements below. Use this list of verbs to assist in creating your learning objectives.

  1. Who is to perform.
  2. What actions they are to take.
  3. A result to be achieved.

Here are two sample learning objectives:

Attendees (who) will be able to identify (action) five red flags during a medical record review (outcome or result).

Speakers (who) will demonstrate (action) three ways to integrate health plan case information into active investigations (outcome or result).
